What is Chhimeki?

Chhimeki is Nepali and means neighborhood. Chhimeki Sanstha Nepal is a self-help network by women for women, which mainly cares for pregnant women and young mothers as well as the nutrition of their infants and toddlers. The volunteers from the neighborhood accompany the women to the doctor, provide them with iron tablets and vitamins and train them in hygiene and child development. The network operates six Child Care Center in various poor areas of Kathmandu, where more than 160 small children are provided with nutritious food, clean water and competently looked after. The Chhimeki women also organize a common savings system that grants small loans if necessary. They always offer training in cleaning and cooking and help women in the neighborhood find a job - for example in the Hotel Chhimeki!
